Digital Transformation Group

A digital transformation group is a dedicated team that will be responsible for defining, designing, and implementing the digital transformation strategy. In addition to the business/IT alignment function that they have now, they will now need to have a focus on customers as well.

They will need to be able to articulate the business value of the digital transformation they are leading and how it will be a win-win for all stakeholders, not just for business. But you may wonder, “who should be the members of this group?”

Well, there should be various members with different roles and perspectives that will help you achieve your goal. They include:

  • Strategy and innovation leaders
  • IT leaders
  • Business and executive leaders
  • Other roles may include customer experience, HR, and operations.

Digital Transformation Group Members

Strategy and Innovation Leaders

Strategy and innovation leaders (digital strategists, SMEs) will be responsible for the business strategy and vision of digital transformation. They will need to be able to:

  • define the business strategy and vision of digital transformation
  • define the value proposition of the company based on its strategy and vision, 
  • outline what success looks like (what metrics should be measured)
  • list what the future state looks like (what does it look like when we get there)
  • and then carry out a gap analysis between the current state and future state.

This group of people should also help in designing a new future state organization structure that is more agile and competitive in the market.  

IT Leaders

IT leaders (CIO, CTO, IT manager) will be responsible for redesigning IT systems to deliver more value to customers. They need to be able to design the new services that will deliver on the defined value proposition. This new set of services will need to support new digital channels such as mobile apps, social media sites, etc. 

Further, it is their responsibility to design a data architecture that is scalable, secure, reliable, and fast enough to respond to business events in real-time. Then, they need to align their group with the new business strategy by helping in defining a new set of KPIs.

Business and Executive Leaders

Then comes the business and executive leaders. These are business owners who are responsible for the success of their business unit. They will need to define what success looks like for their business unit in the digital age. They will need to define what metrics need to be measured.

Furthermore, they are responsible for aligning their teams towards the new vision and strategy. They also need to set up their digital transformation group (for smaller businesses) or for help in setting up the digital transformation group (for bigger businesses). 

Other Roles

Customer experience and HR leaders will be responsible for handling the change management aspects of digital transformation. This includes creating a vision of how employees (HR) and customers (customer experience) will play a role in this change management process. They will also be responsible for ensuring that everyone is aware of the changes they need to make during the transition period.
